Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo (in Bulgarian Велико Търново, translatable as the " Great Tarnovo ") is the cultural center of the north of Bulgaria.
It is placed in the north center of Bulgaria, at Stara Planina's feet. It is the biggest municipality in the area of Velikotarnovska.
The relief is varied with plains, hills and mountains. The city is placed in the hillsides of the river Yantra and surrounded by the hills of Athos, Trapezitsa, Tsarevets and Lily. These ones reach an altitude of between 210 and 325 m.
The climate is moderated continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The annual average temperature is around 11ºC.
The hills, meadows, mountains, caves, forests and several species, have contributed to the occupation of these places by the man from the antiquity to the present day. The first settlement dates back from 4.300 years B.C.
Veliko Tarnovo is the administrative, cultural, educational and economical center of the region. The municipality has 37 cities (Veliko Tarnovo, Kilifarevo and Debelets and 36 towns) and an approximate population of 102.000 persons in the year 2010.
The main road that links east with west and the north of Bulgaria with the south crosses Veliko Turnovo. The city is to equidistant distances from the principal cities of the country (Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas).
The economic profile of the municipality is characterized by the development of a modern industry of tourism, which offers congresses, rural, cultural and ecological tourism. Other sectors in the local economy are also the wood industry and electronics, food processing industry, trade and services. It is a highly developed municipality.
Veliko Tarnovo's municipality has several resources for the developing the tourism: nature of great beauty, historical and cultural monuments and museums, unique architecture sites, monasteries, thermal springs, rich hunt zones.
In 1997, Veliko Tarnovo become the first city of eastern Europe which obtained the Special Prize of the European Union for Sustainable Development.
The cultural offer is constituted by art galleries, exhibition rooms, the Regional Library of P. Slaveikov, the Musical Dramatic Theatre Kissimov Constantine, cultural centers, and the Youth House. The Bulgarians artists association of Veliko Tarnovo organizes numerous exhibitions around the country and outside it. The Culture and Sports Palace "Vasil Levski" offers good conditions for local, national and international events.
